That "$99 whole-house special" is a bait ad - the real number appears once they are in your hallway, or the "clean" is a shop-vac at the register. We photograph the inside of your ducts before and after instead.

Honeywell Vent Sanitizing: The Austin Owner’s Guide

If your Honeywell vent sanitizing system has stopped doing its job, we stock Honeywell-compatible sanitizing components on our trucks and install them across Austin, typically between $225 and $410 installed depending on your duct layout and which Honeywell component failed. Most jobs are completed the same visit, and you’ll have a written price in your hands before we touch a single vent. The usual story we hear on Austin service calls: the system was installed a few years back, nobody thought about it again, and the first sign of trouble is either a faint musty smell returning to the master bedroom or a UV lamp that never seems to glow the way it used to.

Which Honeywell Models This Applies To

Most Austin homes we service run either the Honeywell UV100A system (the surface-mount unit you’ll see bolted to the return plenum or the coil box) or the Honeywell UV2400 series, which mounts inside the duct itself. The two are not interchangeable, and that’s the single most common mismatch we find when someone installed a “deal” from an online marketplace and it never quite fit right. The UV100A takes a single 14-inch lamp and is designed for coil sanitizing on systems up to 5 tons. The UV2400 comes in both a single-lamp and dual-lamp configuration and is rated for whole-duct exposure on larger homes, which matters in Austin because so many of the newer builds south of the river run two separate air handlers. The part number you need is printed right on the ballast housing, but if that label is faded from heat, measure the lamp length: 14 inches versus 16 inches settles most compatibility questions immediately. As an independent service provider, we’re not affiliated with Honeywell, but we install and service their sanitizing equipment because the build quality holds up better than most alternatives in Texas attic heat. For the record, we also stock replacement sanitizing parts for Lennox, Trane, and Carrier systems, so if your Honeywell shares a plenum with another brand’s coil, we can usually handle the whole job in one visit.

Signs Your Honeywell Vent Sanitizing Is Failing

  • The lamp won’t light, or flickers at startup. In Austin’s summer attic temperatures, the ballast on a UV100A takes a beating. Heat kills the ballast long before the lamp itself gives out, and a flickering start is the early warning.
  • You smell that familiar musty odor again, usually in one specific room. This means the sanitizer stopped killing microbial growth on the coil or in the duct and the problem is back. If it’s concentrated in one room, the issue may be localized to a specific duct run rather than the coil itself.
  • The lamp looks dark or has blackened ends. A UV-C lamp that’s at end of life will often show visible darkening at the base. That’s normal wear, but it means the lamp is putting out almost no sanitizing energy even if it still lights.
  • The system hums but no light appears. This is almost always a failed lamp, not a failed ballast, but it’s worth having a technician confirm. Guessing wrong means buying a part you don’t need.
  • Your energy bill crept up during AC season. When a Honeywell coil sanitizer quits, biological growth builds on the evaporator coil and forces the system to work harder to move air. It’s not dramatic, but a slow upward drift in cooling cost is a real symptom in Austin’s long cooling season.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we charge in Austin, and what you’re actually paying for:

Service Typical Installed Price
Honeywell UV lamp replacement (UV100A or UV2400) $225 – $310
Honeywell ballast replacement $285 – $380
Full sanitizing unit replacement (lamp + ballast) $340 – $410
Whole-system sanitizing deep clean (coil + duct) $450 – $750 based on system size

The range depends on how accessible your air handler is (an attic install in an older Hyde Park bungalow is a different job than a closet-mounted unit in a newer build) and whether you need a lamp, a ballast, or both. We write the price down and hand it to you before the work starts, and the price on that sheet is the price you pay. Every Honeywell sanitizing part we install carries a 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the lamp dies prematurely or the install was faulty, we return and correct it at no charge. Dale Whitmore has seen too many people burned by door-step price changes to let that happen on his watch.

DIY or Call Us?

You can check two things safely without opening anything: whether the lamp visibly glows through the viewport (if your Honeywell model has one) and whether the ballast housing is warm to the touch. Beyond that, this becomes an electrical job, and a UV-C lamp running in a closed duct is genuinely hazardous if opened improperly. UV-C light burns skin and eyes on contact, and a lamp that’s cracked can release mercury vapor into your home’s air stream. That’s not a scare line; it’s the honest reason we advise against opening the housing yourself. If you want us to handle it, call (254) 848-6913 and we’ll schedule a visit with a defined arrival window, diagnose the failed component on the spot, and leave the work area cleaner than we found it. That’s the Kingswell Way, and we put it in writing on every job.
